The best Madeira wine since 1850

Origins and History

The Henriques family settled in the Câmara de Lobos area in the 15th century becoming the largest wine-growing landlords in the island. The first vineyards were planted in this area by order of Henry the Navigator around 1425. Initially, the vineyards were planted in the terraces of Pico da Torre, owned by the Henriques family and located on the slopes of the Estreito de Câmara de Lobos and Quinta Grande valleys; these regions were traditionally known for producing the best Madeira wines.

From the very beginning, the Henriques family occupied a privileged position in terms of wine-growing and the art of producing wine. The family founded its first company in 1850 and, in 1925, it began exporting its own wines instead of supplying them to other local exporters.

In June 1992, the company made a global investment on an expansion programme that amounted to over € 5,500,000.00. The new facilities provided the company with modern vinification and aging capacities.

More recently, in 1995, in the parish of Quinta Grande and at an altitude ranging between 600 and 750 meters above sea level, the company planted new vines that, with an area of 10 hectares, is the largest continuous vineyard in the island and also the first mechanized wine-producing area in Madeira.

The Henriques & Henriques company, the only one that holds its own vineyards, continues to invest on the most recent and innovative technologies while keeping the unchangeable family tradition of producing the best Madeira wines, which has been lasting for 550 years.
